The island, with an area of 168 square kilometers, is mostly mountains and tropical forest, with coconut fields in the lowlands. Most residents live in Thong Sala, the main gateway into the island from Samui. Koh Phangan’s main exports are coconuts, with more than one million coconut exports to Bangkok each month. Fishing and tourism also play significant roles in the island’s economy. Around 95% of the population are Buddhists, and Buddhism plays a major role in daily life.
Tourist destinations on Koh Phangan include the Phaeng Waterfall National Park, the Chinese temple built after a woman’s dream in 1990, the largest Yang tree in Thailand, and Wat Khao Noi, the oldest temple on the island with a Buddha statue that is over 300 years old.
