Retreat location
In the eighth century, the Javanese Hindu priest Rsi Marhandya came to Bali from Java and meditated at the confluence of the two Wos rivers at Campuan, which is just south of the modern town center where Purana Boutique Resort is located. Dang Hyang Nirartha, the Javanese priest considered to be the founder of Bali’s religious practices, later established and expanded a shrine in that area. It was a hub for natural medicine and healing, which is how the name Ubud originated – ‘ubad’ means medicine in ancient Balinese.
