Food
Food is a crucial source of energy and nourishment for our bodies. The quality and types of food we consume have a significant impact on our physical and mental well-being. When it comes to yoga, food is seen as more than just nutrition for the body. A proper diet is an essential part of a holistic yogic practice, as it provides the necessary nutrients and energy for our bodies, while also considering the energetic aspect of nutrition.
Have you ever noticed how the food you eat affects your yoga practice? In Ayurveda, the sister science of yoga, the concept of “Sattva” emphasizes purity and promotes self-control, spiritual well-being, intelligence, virtue, awareness, and happiness. Sattvic foods, which are pure in both mind and body, nourish our minds, promote clarity, compassion, and calmness, and help sharpen our intellect.
According to the Bhagavad-Gita, a sattvic diet is light, easy to digest, and enriched with purity or prana. It fosters positive thoughts and brings satisfaction to the mind. By following a sattvic diet, you can stay alert, refreshed, and peaceful.
During our yoga courses, we follow the teachings of Ayurveda by providing our students with delicious vegan meals three times a day. Our experienced and caring kitchen team prepares the food hygienically and with love. Meals are served buffet style, offering a variety of vegetarian dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You can enjoy unlimited servings and also have access to refreshing drinks throughout the day.
So, when you join our course, rest assured that you will have access to nutritious, tasty meals that align with the principles of Ayurveda. Start your journey towards a healthier and more balanced lifestyle with us!

November 28, 2022 at 12:00 amThe rooms were infested with cockroaches – I had to throw away my suitcase full of them. The food was repetitive (closed kitchen on weekends or disgusting porridge), and there was nothing around to eat. The yoga classes were for beginners, not for teaching. One student had to leave urgently, feeling sad and sick. They pass off lack of hygiene and seriousness as authenticity. In the kitchen, cleaning was not done properly, and there were only local male villagers (not friendly at all – not a safe atmosphere). It’s far from the welcoming and spiritually profound India. The founder is never there, the heart of an ashram is its GURU. Run away from this place! They make a huge amount of money and forget how much we sacrifice (time/money) to fulfill a DREAM! This dream is crushed by people who only care about money and not providing proper services or a good atmosphere. I’m not criticizing the three teachers who were nice and did their best with what they had. The anatomy class was a joke with a tiny skeleton and an unintelligible lesson. In my entire life, I have never left such a harsh review, but I want to say to women dedicated to their art and love for yoga, go somewhere else. I left with a fever of 40 degrees, and it took me a month in bed to recover. They left me without hot water for 8 days, with a smelly blanket, and so on! I was immensely shocked and disgusted.

November 8, 2022 at 12:00 amI loved everything about this school! One thing I really appreciated was the easy access we had to all the yoga resources. They started off the learning journey with the history and philosophy of yoga, giving us a big picture before diving into the specifics. The courses were so well organized and the teachers explained everything clearly. They took care in going through each posture in detail, making sure we understood how to do them properly and preventing any potential injuries. Plus, they made sure to cater to individuals of all levels.

November 6, 2022 at 12:00 amArranging my exams was a struggle, but I managed it. The videos were nicely organized and well-done. The teachers really knew their stuff.

October 31, 2022 at 12:00 amSometimes we didn’t edit the videos, which was pretty cool. I loved how I could finish the course in just one to three months. The recorded lessons, led by authentic Indian yogis and yoginis, were amazing. And the locations they chose for filming the videos made me feel like I was actually in Rishikesh.

October 29, 2022 at 12:00 amThe asana practice at the school wasn’t great. They hire teachers without properly interviewing them or testing their skills and knowledge. Some teachers are hired based on personal connections, even if they don’t have enough experience teaching certain styles of yoga. Each batch’s experience depends on which teachers they have, like a lottery. I was there for 2 months and saw how changing the teachers completely changed the experience for each batch.
It’s important to note that the school’s founder doesn’t teach or participate in the teaching process. His knowledge and experience don’t matter to you. The information on the website is just his personal knowledge that he doesn’t share with students because he doesn’t teach or train the teachers at the school.
There isn’t a class that teaches you how to teach, so you aren’t prepared to be a teacher. You only learn some basic theoretical concepts and practice yoga yourself. They don’t teach the anatomy of yoga asanas or explain what each asana does for your mind and body. The practice at the school feels mindless, just doing for the sake of doing.
The course felt more like a yoga retreat than a teacher training program, and the quality of the retreat is questionable. The food quality and timing don’t follow Ayurvedic and yogic rules.
On a positive note, the philosophy teacher at the school is amazing. She has great knowledge and emits a serene energy. She explains yogic philosophical concepts in an easy and accessible way. She emphasizes that yoga is a path to liberation, not just a physical practice. However, it’s important to know that she won’t be at the school in November and December. Keep that in mind if you’re considering applying for the YTT program.

October 19, 2022 at 12:00 amI took the 300-hour course by following the pre-recorded classes online. It was a bit challenging for me because I live in a different continent and couldn’t attend the live classes. However, I had a great learning experience because the program for the recorded classes was easy to follow and packed with valuable information. The asanas practices were especially wonderful as I got to learn various techniques. The teachers were extremely knowledgeable and explained everything in great detail. I highly recommend this course, especially for busy individuals like myself who need to divide their learning time throughout the week.

September 15, 2022 at 12:00 amI absolutely adore this school and the teachers here. They make me feel incredibly satisfied for so many reasons:
1. The structure of the classes is perfect for me. They include both pre-recorded and live sessions, allowing for self-study at my own pace.
2. The teachers are simply amazing. They are enthusiastic, helpful, and always available to answer my questions and clear any doubts I have in a prompt and proper manner.
3. The pre-recorded videos are packed with valuable information, and I appreciate the ability to pause and review them whenever I need to.
I’ve found a helpful strategy of summarizing what I’ve learned, which not only helps me remember the lessons better but also makes it easier for me to revise when needed. It’s even been beneficial for my theory exams.
I’m actually considering coming back for the 300-hour course because I love everything about this place. Thank you so much, HYA and BYS! You guys are the best.

August 26, 2022 at 12:00 amNothing… Even though the pace was very intense (which is normal for an intensive training), they had perfectly organized everything so that we could quickly appreciate our progress. We learned much more than just yoga there. In a very pleasant environment, we were able to develop our own teaching style.

July 31, 2022 at 12:00 amWhen I got there, the building was a complete fraud! It was still under construction—even the walls weren’t finished. The whole place was covered in concrete dust, and the noise from the construction was relentless. It was absolutely awful!

June 22, 2022 at 12:00 amI’d definitely rather not have had certain experiences like getting bitten by a dog and injuring my back… but now they’re like souvenirs from a memorable time with amazing people. They also remind me to let go of certain aspects of my personality. The instructors were all super knowledgeable, especially Shanti. She’s a master of her craft and has an incredible ability to share her knowledge. She can adapt to any group, any level, and any situation. It was truly marvelous to see her teach everything from philosophy to meditation and pranayama. Her consistency and strong structure every day provided a safe foundation for us to grow and explore different topics. Overall, this school is a safe and welcoming environment for practicing all aspects of yoga. I really, really loved it! It was a challenge to try being vegan and giving up coffee and alcohol, but I’ve never felt so relaxed and at ease with life before.

March 18, 2022 at 12:00 amI really enjoyed my time studying with the Himalayan Yoga Association. I learned so much and it was an amazing experience. The course was awesome because it was easily accessible and didn’t break the bank. I quickly realized that I got way more than my money’s worth. I learned a bunch of new practices that I didn’t even know existed and now I have an even deeper love for ashtanga, vinyasa, and hatha yoga. I can’t wait to start using everything I’ve learned and do something awesome with it. Shoutout to all the incredible tutors and the people who made this amazing course possible at such a great price. I wish you all the best! Thank you.

January 10, 2022 at 12:00 amI highly recommend the course because it has a great structure, offers live zoom classes, pre-recorded classes, and written resource material. The teachers are very accessible and answer our questions through live sessions, email, or at the course page. Plus, there’s a written test and a practical test after all the classes to ensure the course’s high quality.

December 29, 2021 at 12:00 amThe accommodations are run-down and need renovation, and there is an unpleasant smell in the rooms. The quality of the meals could also be improved. It’s a peaceful and pleasant place, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, perfect for practicing Yoga. The team of teachers is competent and attentive, and all the speakers are very inspiring.

October 23, 2021 at 12:00 amI highly recommend this teacher training. The teachers are amazing and have incredible knowledge that they share very effectively. It’s not always easy to find instructors who can convey information so well. Plus, they provide an online platform with well-structured lessons that give a great overview. On top of that, they offer daily classes on Zoom, which they also make available on YouTube. This shows their dedication to making it accessible for everyone. It was especially beneficial for me as a parent with a young child, as I could study whenever I had the time. After completing this teacher training, I feel equipped to continue my yogic journey with confidence and enthusiasm for learning even more.

October 13, 2021 at 12:00 amSo, I signed up for this online yoga course and they were nice in the beginning. But as soon as I paid, everything changed. They gave me access to the course for only 10 days. Can you believe it? And to make things worse, they kept saying it would take just one more day to provide the access code. But it ended up taking them a whole 10 days! And after that, they didn’t even bother to keep me updated. Honestly, I completely lost interest in this course and had a terrible experience with these companies. It was a total disappointment.

February 8, 2021 at 12:00 amI felt a bit sad when I clicked on the last video of the new learning videos. But I’m determined to continue my yoga training with HYA’s YTT 300 and YTT 500. The pre-recorded videos for the online course were really good and well presented. They were easy to understand. Whenever I had questions, I contacted Yogini Neelam and she always replied quickly. I gained valuable knowledge from the online course alone. Now I’m saving up to go on the YTT 300 hours and this time actually experience Rishikesh. I really want to dive deeper into yoga and Himalayan Yoga Ashram teaches authentic yoga and captures the true essence of what yoga is all about. I’m so glad I chose them as my first teachers in my yoga training. ?

March 18, 2020 at 12:00 amI noticed cultural differences during my time in India, but they didn’t surprise me since it wasn’t my first visit. However, some of the other students complained a lot about them. Personally, I absolutely loved everything about it – the food, the ambiance, and the entire experience. Admittedly, it was initially challenging to be without the usual comforts I’m used to, but it turned out to be an incredible opportunity for personal growth and I found inner peace in the process.

February 7, 2020 at 12:00 amThe accommodations are very poor. They need to hire more staff to clean properly. I was there in winter and it was so cold, it’s really difficult to do asanas when you’re freezing. I suggest getting a couple of heaters for the halls. The teachers are very talented, the staff is friendly, and the food is excellent (the kitchen staff is very professional and hardworking). They are very receptive to suggestions, whenever we asked for something or encountered any issues, they immediately fixed them. I can honestly say that I learned so much and felt like they were my family. I hope to come back to wonderful Rishikesh, India someday.

December 9, 2019 at 12:00 amI’m so grateful for everything and I can’t complain. I absolutely love the vinyasa class and ashtanga too. I always want to learn new poses and delve deeper into my practice. Swammi Ji is my favorite teacher in Philosophy class – he’s incredibly knowledgeable, wise, and also really funny.
A big thank you to Ashu Ji, our anatomy teacher. He’s amazing at teaching and he makes all the subjects easy to understand with plenty of details. The place itself is incredible – it teaches me humility and gratitude for what I have and my surroundings.
The kitchen staff deserves a special thank you as well. They’re fantastic at cooking and they’re the reason I’ve become a vegetarian. They’re also always so kind, making special masala chai tea for us.
To all the teachers – Vipin, Ankit, Kriti, Vivek, MJ, Ashu, Swammi Ji, Pankage Ji – thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and love with me and all the students. Thanks to HYA, I’ve found a new family around the world for life.
Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to Himanshu Ji. Thank you for always being there and ensuring that I have everything I need and making sure the students are comfortable.
I love you all and thank you so much, Himalayan Yoga Association. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this journey.

December 6, 2019 at 12:00 amSometimes, the food wasn’t sufficient or varied enough. The mandatory orphanage visit was awful because it felt like being in a zoo. The yoga school is located about a half-hour car ride away from Rishikesh, which makes it much quieter compared to Tapovan/Rishikesh. This is perfect for unwinding and soaking in the atmosphere. There are classes in Vinyasa, Asthanga, and Alignment, with only 14-15 people. The Sunday temple excursion was incredible. Ankit, Rahul, Kirti, and Bipin were fantastic yogis.

December 5, 2019 at 12:00 amI can’t even begin to describe my experience with HYA. They created such an inclusive and supportive environment with a curriculum that leaves you feeling totally prepared to teach yoga safely.
The teachers at HYA genuinely care about their students and there was excellent communication throughout the course. I learned everything I had hoped for in a yoga teacher training. The teachers are so knowledgeable and inspiring. They really opened my eyes and heart to the true meaning of yoga. It was a complete immersion into an authentic yoga practice.
Not only were the accommodations clean, but the food was delicious too. They served satvic vegetarian meals that were just amazing. I had a blast on all of the Sunday excursions like visiting waterfalls, touring orphanages, and hiking up to catch the sunset in the Himalayas.
I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn yoga philosophy, proper alignment, anatomy, meditation, pranayama, and yoga asana.
A huge shoutout to Himanshu, Vivek, Vipin, Ankit, Kirti, and all of the staff at HYA. They made this experience truly unforgettable.

December 2, 2019 at 12:00 amI’m sorry, but I have to write a negative review about this place/course. I usually don’t like giving negative reviews and would prefer not to, but I thought it might be helpful for some people. The actual place where we stayed was new, not the one the good reviews were talking about. It had new teachers, mostly young ones who had very little teaching experience. There were a lot of things missing, like a proper teaching methodology and many things were not covered in their own workbook, such as poses and anatomy. Additionally, there was a lack of organization and responsibility from some of the teachers. I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t recommend it.
Helpful ReviewIn general, doing a yoga course in India is a great experience. Rishikesh is an interesting place with fascinating people, and if you are on the yoga path, I would definitely suggest going, but perhaps with a different school.

September 2, 2019 at 12:00 amManagement could have been more consistent in their presence, which would have been beneficial for a stronger personal connection. It would also be helpful to have better organization when it comes to knowing about exams and having a clear syllabus and learning outcomes, especially in yoga therapy and anatomy. Despite these areas for improvement, I had an incredible experience with the HYA training. I absolutely adored my alignment and vinyasa yoga teacher, Rajesh Rawat, as well as my philosophy teacher, Bhavesh Yuj. They were both outstanding. I was truly blessed to have such wonderful classmates during the training; we formed a tight-knit family and had a truly special experience together. It was unforgettable, to say the least. As for HYA, the accommodation was clean and conveniently located in a quiet area close to the center. The food was delicious, and the staff did their best to ensure our happiness. The days were intense, but the schedule was well-planned. It is worth mentioning that instructors may change each month, which seems to be a common practice in schools throughout Rishikesh. Keep in mind that the instructor listed on the website may not necessarily be the one teaching you.

February 28, 2019 at 12:00 amThe teachers showed great commitment and approached teaching in a holistic manner. Yogi Pradeep has a deep understanding of Anatomy and Alignment, as if it’s second nature to him. His teaching style is truly incredible, combining scientific knowledge with practical application in a way that engages and motivates. Yogi Ram radiates positivity and his Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga classes leave you feeling uplifted and enlightened. Yogi Vishnu generously shared his vast knowledge of Philosophy and Meditation, creating a well-rounded course experience. The location, nestled in the bush next to a mountain stream that flows into the Ganga River, was absolutely perfect. It allowed us to connect with nature and enhanced the entire learning process.

February 18, 2019 at 12:00 amIt’s difficult to believe someone who doesn’t give any constructive feedback, right?! But here are two aspects I suggest improving:
1) The daily schedule is already intense, so it’s important to ensure that students respect the time and that the teacher finishes each class as planned. Maybe they could even start the next one a little later to allow for a break.
Those 15 minutes of break can really make a difference, you know!
2) It’s not just about yoga… and here’s my obsessive/professional/hedonistic side speaking: make sure that all the blankets and bedroom amenities are properly washed between each Teacher Training. Maybe I was just unlucky, but it wasn’t a big deal to ask for a new one. 🙂
I have to say, everyone at the Ashram has always been more than helpful whenever I needed something! I’m so grateful to all of them! From the first email before booking my flight to the last day dealing with health issues – and all the magic in between – I had the most genuine yoga experience of my life with the Himalayan Yoga {Association} Family! (And believe me… I’ve had quite a few experiences, from famous Ashtanga Mysore Certified Teachers to rigorous Iyengar Yoga workshops… all of them great, I must confess!)
Even though you might be skeptical at first when you see that all the teachers seem quite young… all those incredible human beings who will guide and surround you (including the office and kitchen staff!) have something truly special in common (which is rare to find nowadays!): humble passion, deep knowledge and curiosity about anatomy and philosophy, and no fake or unnecessary stuff in the background… Just plain and simple yoga, in the best, fullest, and most authentic way!
So, in my opinion… Book it…!!

December 31, 2018 at 12:00 amWe were all surprised when we found ourselves isolated in the “jungle.” Being away from the city was incredibly rejuvenating and peaceful. However, we were not prepared for the unexpected cold, and it was a challenge for all of us to adapt to it. The living conditions are not the easiest, but it’s all about how we perceive it. We can either see it as something we didn’t pay for or as an experience meant for us to learn from.
When I arrived at the ashram, I had a heavy heart due to some events that had occurred in my life prior to this journey. But the two weeks spent with all the wonderful people who were there for the same purpose lifted my spirits. The moments we shared with our instructors made us feel like we were part of a family. Even though it was only two weeks, saying goodbye was difficult.
The food at the ashram is absolutely amazing! It’s such a luxury to have delicious Indian vegetarian meals served to us three times a day. Our favorite gurus, Vivek and Pradeep, spent their days with us, shared their meals with us, and made us feel like we were part of something important. Thank you all for providing such a wonderful experience.

December 5, 2018 at 12:00 amThe anatomy course didn’t have much structure, but it was interesting. I think they should teach more in-depth anatomy to become a qualified yoga teacher.
The meditation course was a bit frustrating. They didn’t explain the theory or the benefits, and there was no gradual introduction to the practice. They just started with a 50-minute meditation on the first day.
But the teachers were amazing! They were so knowledgeable, engaging, friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. Satish (ashtanga) and Rajesh (alignment) were incredible instructors, and I felt privileged to learn from them.
The location is fantastic. It’s up in the town, away from the noise of traffic. If you walk up the hill, you’ll find yourself surrounded by mountains and forests, with a stream, clean air, and a waterfall. And if you walk down the hill, you’ll reach the Ganga River, along with shops, restaurants, and transportation options.

October 26, 2018 at 12:00 amThe staff is amazing – they are helpful, kind, and always open to suggestions. They are also flexible and willing to accommodate our needs. Whenever we discuss topics, they explain them nicely and are appreciative of our questions. The practices they provide are both challenging and inspiring.
Before going out for days-off activities, they make sure to discuss and plan them with us students. They take great care of everyone.
The food here is really good. It’s varied, tasty, and always fresh. If you prefer something non-spicy, they are happy to accommodate your request. Plus, they even have their own in-house eatery, so they can provide food even outside school hours.
Every single staff member we encounter has been friendly and helpful. We couldn’t ask for a better team.

October 7, 2018 at 12:00 amNow let’s talk about the negatives. The training advertised itself as an ADVANCED Vinyasa and Ashtanga YTTC. Unfortunately, there was hardly any Vinyasa involved. Our Vinyasa teacher basically ran a bootcamp for two weeks, completely ignoring the flow and synchronizing with the breath. It consisted of a rushed 50-minute warm-up with lots of fast repetitions and holding, followed by a bunch of Sun Salutations, and only a couple of Asanas before cooldown. Throughout the entire practice, there were no advanced asanas, no guidance on building a flow or mastering asanas for advanced practitioners. We even complained to the office, but nothing changed. It wasn’t until two weeks later that we finally started teaching, and even then, we felt ill-prepared because there was only one hour dedicated to learning how to actually prepare a class and work on a flow. And let me remind you, some of us had already requested more teaching theory and actual vinyasa.
The first four people who taught their Vinyasa class didn’t receive any participation or valuable feedback from the teacher. He was too busy playing with his phone or keys, going to the restroom, and even napping at one point. Overall, I didn’t learn any teaching methods or advanced vinyasa practices, which was a major reason why I chose this training. And to top it all off, on the last day, the teacher didn’t even bother showing up, which is not only disrespectful but also highly disappointing considering that the office didn’t seem to care. This review is specifically for the 300h YYTC ADVANCED course.
Now let’s move on to the positives. Our theory teachers for alignment, anatomy, pranayama, yoga therapy, meditation, and philosophy were absolutely amazing. They had a wealth of knowledge, and I genuinely feel like I learned a lot from them. However, I should mention that the alignment and anatomy portion mainly covered what I had already learned in my 200h course (which I completed in Ecuador) and didn’t dive into the details of more advanced poses. It would have been nice to explore those, especially since this was marketed as an ADVANCED YTTC. Nevertheless, it was still beneficial to revisit the basics. Lastly, our Ashtanga teacher, Satish, was fantastic. I loved his teaching style, and even though I’m not particularly fond of Ashtanga in my personal practice, I really enjoyed attending his classes and gained a lot from them.

September 23, 2018 at 12:00 amIt felt more like a business than a school or yoga ashram, with very large class sizes. September 18, 2018 at 12:00 amI think it would be nice if they cleaned my yoga mats more often. They give us water infused with antibacterial leaves once or twice a week, but I would prefer if they renewed it more frequently. Some people complain about the cafeteria food, but to be honest, I actually enjoy it and feel safer eating there. I heard that the menu was designed for an ayurvedic diet, but most of the time I don’t know what the dishes are called. It would be helpful to have the names of the dishes listed. Our school is located in a great spot in Rishikesh – up in the mountains, peaceful, and away from the hustle and bustle of the town. Besides our classes, the staff and teachers also plan excursions in nature to help us relax and bond. One of my fondest memories was practicing morning yoga outside by the Ganga River! I also really appreciate that the teachers are always accessible to answer our questions and guide us through various preparatory exercises.
