It’s only about 15 kilometers away from the famous resort island of Koh Samui. Koh Phangan is actually the largest of Samui’s neighboring islands, covering an area of 168 square kilometers.

Most of the inhabitants live in Thong Sala, which serves as the main entrance to the island from Samui. The main products of Koh Phangan are coconuts, with the island producing over a million coconut exports to Bangkok every month. Fishing is another major industry, along with the booming tourism business.

The island has a population that is predominantly Buddhist, with around 95% of the population practicing this religion. Buddhism holds a very significant role in the daily lives of the people here.

The only downside is the direct street outside the door and the music from the bars around some evenings. But with good earplugs, that’s manageable too. The resort is located in a small park with swings and various seating areas to relax. The staff is very friendly and puts a lot of effort into all areas. My bungalow was small and cozy with a hammock on the porch. It’s not the newest, but absolutely sufficient and comfortable. The yoga instructors were all amazing, my favorites being Sarah, Emma & Valerie. There are plenty of opportunities every day to try different types of yoga and you can plan your day as you wish. Across the street, the Shell Lounge is cozy right by the sea, where you can indulge in delicious shakes and food.

The Garden Rooms are located near a noisy street and some loud bars, so make sure to bring ear plugs.

It’s important to provide more details about the workshops instead of just listing titles. I attended a workshop where the teacher unexpectedly started challenging our beliefs, insisting that believing in Karma is the key to inner peace – not what I had in mind and definitely not recommended.

The yoga classes were expertly led and the instructors were knowledgeable. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The breathtaking sunrise view during dinner made the experience even more memorable.

The costs might be on the higher end, but they are similar to other options on the island. It could have had a better intro, especially for the food – explaining what is included and what costs extra. Overall, everything was good! This retreat allows you to choose which sessions to attend at your own pace, which is great. Plus, with the individual room, you also get a daily free massage. The food options were excellent, and the restaurant was lovely.

On my way back, I needed to pay for my taxi to the nearest village. Unfortunately, they didn’t offer any hospitality for me to stay an extra night at the dormitory before going back home, even though there was a possibility. Additionally, they charged me for doing my laundry, which was quite expensive. The retreat itself was very pricey, and the lessons seemed to be repetitive, with back-to-back relaxation meditations. Sometimes, it was hard to keep up with the lessons. They also had a Christmas party, a women’s circle, and a swimming area called Zen Beach. After I complained, I was compensated for the issues I had experienced.

Ananda offers a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge of yoga or start your journey from scratch. Throughout my stay, I felt comfortable, learned a lot, and truly got the chance to rejuvenate. What I loved the most was the freedom to structure my day however I wanted. They have a wide variety of yoga and meditation options to choose from. I didn’t take part in yoga teacher training, but I can easily see how this place would be perfect for it! Ananda gives you excellent value for your money. The food at “The Shell” by the beach was absolutely amazing, and the staff were always attentive and caring. All the yoga instructors are outstanding and have their own unique qualities. I also appreciated the opportunity to delve deeper into the practice with the workshop offerings. Luxury was definitely the pool, massages, steam bath, and the refreshing ice bath afterwards! I want to thank everyone for making my week so wonderful. I will definitely be returning someday! And I’ve already recommended this place to all my friends and travel companions! 🙂

The street and a few restaurants nearby can be noisy sometimes, but we absolutely loved every second of our yoga retreat at Ananda 🙂 We stayed for 5 days and received so much more than we had expected. We had plenty of yoga classes and workshops to choose from, and the teachers were incredible. The food at the shell was delicious, and the staff there were wonderful. We definitely recommend Ananda Yoga and Detox Center for the ultimate yoga experience and spiritual retreat on Koh Phangan. We would happily come back again! Thank you for everything ?!

We would have liked to have received a better orientation to the program because as beginners, we felt a little lost in deciding which courses to take and what to expect from them.

Unfortunately, the rooms were very dark, which made us not want to stay there.

The staff was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful.

There is a wide variety of activities available.

There are many cozy places to relax, especially the restaurant right by the beach.

The food is super delicious and there is a wide selection to choose from.

The daily massages are a dream.

They always prioritize cleanliness, especially with the yoga equipment, which is in very good condition.

We felt so relaxed and recharged after traveling through Thailand for 2 weeks. The accommodation was clean and nice. The yoga program was extensive and we had many different yoga teachers who taught us using various methods and levels of instruction. Meeting Sabina was a real honor as she taught us the basic yoga positions and helped us a lot. We also want to thank Paola for her cheerful and friendly personality. We had such a great time and will definitely recommend you to others!

The rooms in Thailand were pretty decent, although they could get a bit musty during the rainy season. They provided all the necessary amenities, but they were nothing fancy. I really wished there was a better beach nearby, but unfortunately, the good ones were a 20-minute drive to the north of the resort.

However, attending the yoga teacher training at Ananda Yoga and Detox made me feel like I definitely got my money’s worth. Valerie, the instructor, is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about yoga. Her love for it truly shines through in her teaching. I was amazed at how she managed to run the program and resort while still forming meaningful connections with each student.

Alona, another instructor, showed so much dedication to helping her students improve their yoga practice. It was clear that she genuinely cared about others. Britt, on the other hand, had a laid-back and approachable nature. She had a talent for uplifting others. With their guidance, I left the training feeling confident in my ability to lead successful yoga classes.

Maybe just one thing to improve – one of the female staff from the Shell lounge seemed a bit impolite and gave off the impression that she didn’t enjoy her job. She didn’t smile, make eye contact, or provide many answers when we asked about the food. However, all the instructors were really great. The food was delicious, and the surroundings, like the garden and pool, were lovely.

The location was amazing, right on the beach with a view of the sunset. And the food was really delicious! I looked forward to the meals every day, and they were always fresh, healthy, and varied. They even accommodated my vegan diet and always served me incredibly tasty food 🙂

I was disappointed with my yoga experience here. It’s more like a resort with an option to take yoga classes, but it’s not a traditional retreat like the title suggests. They cancelled five out of five ashtanga mysore classes without providing replacement teachers, which really limited the number of classes I could attend as an advanced student. There was no compensation for that, so it was quite disappointing.

The check-in process was confusing because there were very few instructions given since the manager wasn’t on-site. There were spider webs in my room, the bed wasn’t made when I arrived, and towards the end of my stay, they didn’t even refill the toilet paper. I was surprised by the lack of cleanliness, especially considering how empty the resort seemed.

The staff was a mixed bag – some were super nice, while others seemed annoyed and couldn’t even be bothered to say “hi”. The restaurant service was pleasant but incredibly slow. I ate there three times a day for six days, and they often forgot or mixed up orders.

Massages were included in the package, one per day. During my fifth massage, the lady blocked my neck, which was concerning. The next day, I asked twice at the detox bar to pair me up with a different masseuse, but they promised without delivering. I had to stick with the same lady for two more massages, or I could have skipped them altogether.

Overall, it wasn’t a terrible stay, but it’s definitely not a yoga retreat worth the money. The place is nice, but the rooms are basic and could be cleaner. The resort has a welcoming atmosphere and some nice amenities, like two shalas, an herbal sauna, a great pool, and plenty of chilling areas. The restaurant serves good food, but the service can be slow. The area is quiet, so having a scooter to get around is recommended.

The yoga retreat seemed a bit pricier compared to other options on the island if you break down the costs of yoga, food, and accommodation. However, it was definitely worth the money considering the breakthroughs I had, the wonderful people I met, the stunning location, the great vibes, and the memories I made. It would be even better if the evening yoga session ended before sunset, giving everyone a chance to witness the beautiful beach sunset. The people were amazing, the location was excellent, the environment was really nice, and the vibes were great. The staff showed great dedication to those in the detox program, and the yoga instructors were highly experienced.

I was hoping the rooms would be better, but for Koh Phangnan standards, they’re actually really nice. In Ananda’s teacher training, Yogis have a great bonding experience and see the best in each other. This program isn’t as strict as a Sivananda Ashram, but there’s plenty of information available to learn if you’re willing to put in the work. The food, pool, steam room, and staff are all great. This program goes beyond just poses, it’s well thought out and provides a wealth of information that will be useful in every aspect of teaching Yoga properly.

The additional classes (pranayama, meditation, anatomy, special classes like pregnancy, etc.) require a lot of improvement. They should focus on improving the cleanliness of the rooms. Though the food was very good, it had limited variety, which is disappointing for a long-term stay. These points reveal the downside of a low-cost TTC, unfortunately. Overall, the yoga classes and alignment were excellent, but I was hoping for a more in-depth experience with all yoga topics.
