Koh Phangan is a beautiful island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, located about 100 kilometers from the coast of Southern Thailand in Surat Thani Province. It’s only 15 kilometers away from the famous resort island of Koh Samui. Koh Phangan is actually the largest of Samui’s neighboring islands, covering an area of 168 square kilometers.
The island is home to stunning mountains and tropical forests, with over 70% of its total area dedicated to them. The lowland areas consist of mountains and coconut fields. Around 14,000 people live in Koh Phangan, with the majority having Chinese heritage. Additionally, there are many Thais from different parts of Thailand who have moved here to establish tourism-related businesses.
Most of the island’s inhabitants reside in Thong Sala, which serves as the main entry point from Samui. Coconuts are the main agricultural product of Koh Phangan, with more than a million exports to Bangkok each month. Fishing is also a significant industry on the island, along with the growing tourism sector.
Buddhism is the predominant religion on Koh Phangan, with approximately 95% of the population practicing it. It holds a significant role in the daily lives of the islanders.
In terms of distance, Koh Samui is just 15 kilometers away from Koh Phangan.

February 7, 2024 at 12:00 amThe only downside is the direct road in front of the door and the music from the surrounding bars on some evenings. But with good earplugs, that’s doable. The complex is located in a small park with swings and various seating areas to relax. They put a lot of effort into all areas and the staff are all very friendly. My bungalow was small and cozy with a hammock on the veranda. It’s not the newest, but it’s absolutely sufficient and comfortable. The yoga teachers were all great, my favorites being Sarah, Emma & Valerie. There are plenty of opportunities every day to try out different types of yoga and you can plan your day yourself. The Shell Lounge opposite is cozy right by the sea, where you can treat yourself to delicious shakes and food.

January 22, 2024 at 12:00 amThe Garden Rooms are located close to a bustling street and some noisy bars, so you’ll want to bring some ear plugs.
It would be helpful to provide more details about the workshops so participants have a better idea of what to expect. Just listing the titles isn’t enough.
I attended a workshop where the teacher unexpectedly challenged our questions and insisted that believing in Karma is the only path to wholeness. It wasn’t what I had anticipated and I wouldn’t recommend it.
The yoga classes were expertly taught and the instructors were knowledgeable. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly and accommodating. The nightly sunsets during dinner made the experience even more special.

January 8, 2024 at 12:00 amThe costs may be on the high end, but they are comparable to other options on the island. It would have been helpful to have a better introduction, especially regarding what’s included and what’s extra in terms of food. Overall, everything was good! This retreat allows you to choose which sessions to attend at your own pace, which is great. Plus, with the individual room, you also get a daily free massage. The food options were excellent, and I especially loved the restaurant.

December 26, 2023 at 12:00 amI had to pay for my taxi to the nearest village on my way back. They didn’t offer any hospitality for staying one more night at the dormitory before I traveled back home, even though there was a possibility or availability. They even charged for laundry, which was quite expensive. The retreat itself was also very pricey. The lessons were almost all the same, one after another, with too much relaxation and meditation. Sometimes it was impossible to follow any lessons at all. They also had a Christmas party, a women’s circle, and a swimming area called Zen Beach. I had to complain and make a claim to receive any compensation.

November 7, 2023 at 12:00 amAnanda is an amazing place where you can either deepen your knowledge of yoga or start your journey from scratch. I was so comfortable throughout my stay, learned a ton, and really got the chance to recharge.
What I absolutely loved was the freedom to plan my own schedule. They had so many different yoga and meditation options to choose from.
Even though I didn’t take part in yoga teacher training, I can totally see how this would be the perfect place for it! You really get your money’s worth here.
The food at “The Shell” on the beach was absolutely fantastic, and the staff was always there to take care of you.
All of the yoga instructors are incredible and each have their own unique style. I also enjoyed the opportunity to dive deeper into the practice with the workshops they offer.
And let me tell you, the pool, the massages, the steam bath, and the ice bath afterwards were pure luxury! Thank you to everyone for such an amazing week. I will definitely be coming back someday!
Oh, and of course, I’ve already recommended this place to all of my friends and travel buddies! 🙂

August 10, 2023 at 12:00 amThe street and a few restaurants nearby can be noisy sometimes, but we absolutely loved our yoga retreat at Ananda 🙂 We stayed for 5 days and got so much more than we expected. The yoga classes and workshops had plenty of options to choose from, and the teachers were absolutely awesome. The food at the shell was delicious, and the staff there made our experience even better. We definitely recommend Ananda Yoga and Detox Center if you’re looking for the full yoga experience and spirit on Koh Phangan. We would come back without a doubt! Thank you for everything ?!

June 28, 2023 at 12:00 amWe would have liked to receive a better introduction to the program, as beginners felt a bit lost about which courses to take and what to expect from them.
Unfortunately, the rooms were very dark, which made us not want to stay there.
The staff was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful.
There is a wide range of activities available.
There are many cozy places to relax, especially the restaurant directly on the beach.
The food is super delicious with a wide selection.
The daily massages are a dream.
Cleanliness is always maintained, especially with the yoga equipment, which is in very good condition.

May 24, 2023 at 12:00 amThe daily schedule was too full for me as an older beginner. I had to skip some things because I didn’t have the energy. Each teacher was different, but they were all very good and friendly. The food is delicious and healthy. It’s a great place.

May 15, 2023 at 12:00 amWe felt so relaxed and recharged after traveling through Thailand for 2 weeks. The accommodation was clean and nice. The yoga program was extensive and had many different yoga teachers who taught us various methods and levels of instruction. Meeting Sabina was a great moment as she helped us a lot with our basic yoga positions. We also want to thank Paola for her joyful attitude and friendly nature. Overall, it was a pleasure and we will definitely recommend it!

January 30, 2023 at 12:00 amThe rooms at the resort were pretty good by Thailand standards, although they could be a little musty during the rainy season. They had everything I needed for my stay, but they weren’t anything fancy. I wished I had access to a nicer beach, but it turned out that the better ones were about a 20 minute drive to the north of the resort.
I felt like I got more than my money’s worth with the yoga teacher training at Ananda Yoga and Detox. Valerie, the instructor, has so much knowledge and a genuine love for yoga that really comes through in her teaching. I was amazed at how she managed to run the program and the resort while still making a personal connection with each of her students.
Alona, another instructor, showed incredible dedication to her students’ yoga practice and genuinely cared about their well-being. And Britt, with her laid-back and approachable nature, was always there to uplift others. These amazing ladies left me feeling confident in my ability to lead successful yoga classes.

January 20, 2023 at 12:00 amThere’s just one small thing that could be improved – one of the female staff members at the Shell lounge seemed a bit impolite and as if she didn’t enjoy her job. She didn’t smile, make eye contact, or provide many answers when we asked about the food. However, I must say, all of the instructors were really good. Also, the food was delicious and the surroundings, including the garden and pool, were quite enjoyable.

December 27, 2022 at 12:00 amI really loved it, I was completely thrilled 🙂 I absolutely loved the training; I was able to improve my own practice and learn a lot about teaching yoga. The teachers were well-trained and they did a great job delivering the content. The location was amazing, right by the beach with a view of the sunset. And the food was excellent! I looked forward to every meal and it was always fresh, healthy, and varied. They accommodated my vegan diet and I always got delicious food 🙂

November 18, 2022 at 12:00 amI missed the time to share the accomplishments, but I’m really happy about enjoying this retreat on this peaceful island. The location, the bar, the accommodation, and the kind people – all very nice.

November 7, 2022 at 12:00 amI wanted an authentic yoga experience, but I was disappointed. The place is more like a resort with an option for yoga classes, but it’s not a traditional retreat like the title suggests. They canceled five out of five ashtanga mysore classes without providing a replacement teacher, which greatly reduced the number of classes available for advanced students like me. I wasn’t compensated for this and it was quite disappointing.
The check-in process was confusing, with very little instructions given because the manager wasn’t present. There were spider webs in my room when I arrived, and the bed wasn’t made, so I had to do it myself and hope it was clean. Towards the end of my stay, they didn’t even refill the toilet paper. I was surprised by the lack of quality considering the resort seemed pretty empty.
The staff was a mixed bag – some were super nice, while others seemed annoyed and couldn’t even bother to say “hi.” The service in the restaurant was kind, but very slow. Since I ate there three times a day for six days in a row, I noticed that they often forgot or mixed up orders.
Massages were included in the package, one per day. On my fifth massage, the therapist blocked my neck, which was concerning. The next day, I asked at the detox bar twice to pair me up with another therapist, but they promised and never delivered. I ended up having to stick with the same therapist for two more massages or skip them altogether.
Overall, it wasn’t a terrible stay, but if you’re looking for a yoga retreat, it’s not worth the money. The place itself is nice, with basic rooms that could be cleaner. The resort has a welcoming atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, two shalas, an herbal sauna, a nice pool, and plenty of chilling areas. The restaurant serves good food that’s tasty. The area is quiet, so it’s convenient to have a scooter to get around.

December 28, 2019 at 12:00 amThe yoga retreat seemed a bit expensive compared to other options on the island if we separate the costs for yoga, food, and accommodation. But, overall, it was definitely worth the money because of the amazing breakthroughs I experienced, the wonderful people I met, the beautiful location, the great vibe, and the unforgettable memories. Also, it would be great if the evening yoga session ends before sunset so that everyone can enjoy the beach sunset. The people at the retreat were amazing, the location was excellent, the environment was really nice, and there were good vibes all around. The staff showed great dedication to those in the detox program, and the yoga instructors were highly experienced.

April 2, 2018 at 12:00 amI was hoping the rooms would be better, but they’re actually really nice compared to Koh Phangnan standards. At Ananda’s teacher training, you cultivate a great bonding experience with other Yogis and see the best in each other. This program isn’t strict like a Sivananda Ashram, but there’s a lot of information available for you to learn if you put in the work. The food, pool, steam room, and staff are all great. This program isn’t just about poses – it’s well thought out and provides you with a wealth of information that’s useful for every aspect of teaching Yoga properly.

Helpful ReviewThe room cleaning was not up to par. It was poor.
On the bright side, the food was very good, but had limited variety. It’s a bit disappointing for a long-term stay.
These points show the downsides of a low-cost TTC, unfortunately. So, overall, it was what I expected, but I had hoped for a deeper experience with all yoga topics.
The yoga classes and alignment, however, were excellent.
