Retreat location

Ananda Yoga & Detox Center in Koh Phangan, Thailand is hosting this retreat. Koh Phangan, an island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, is located about 100 kilometers from the coast of Southern Thailand in Surat Thani Province. It’s also just 15 kilometers away from the famous resort island of Koh Samui. Koh Phangan is the largest of Samui’s neighboring islands, covering an area of 168 square kilometers. With over 70% of its total area being mountains and tropical forest, the remaining lowland is filled with coconut fields. Around 14,000 people live in Koh Phangan, most of whom are of Chinese descent. Additionally, many Thais from different parts of Thailand have moved here to establish tourism-related businesses. The main hub of the island is Thong Sala, which serves as the gateway from Samui.

Coconuts are the primary produce of Koh Phangan, with over one million coconut exports to Bangkok being produced by both Koh Samui and Koh Phangan every month. Fishing is another significant industry on the island, in addition to the thriving tourism sector. Approximately 95% of the island’s population practices Buddhism, which holds great importance in their daily lives.

Food

During this retreat, we will serve you three daily vegetarian or vegan meals at the Ananda Yoga & Detox Center Restaurant. Our restaurant caters to yogi preferences and offers a wide variety of healthy sattvic food. It is prepared in a clean and wholesome environment with love. At the Ananda Yoga & Detox Center, we have a full selection of fresh vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. We serve both local Thai cuisine and western food. You can enjoy your meals in our beachfront restaurant lounge!

For breakfast, we have options like Chia Bowl, Granola Bowl, Fruit & Yogurt Bowl, and Things on Toast (with options like eggs, hummus, avocado, pumpkin, and feta).

For lunch and dinner, we offer delicious entrees such as Pumpkin, Broccoli, and Tom Kha soup, Israeli, Greek, and Watermelon & Feta salad, as well as Vietnamese fresh spring rolls.

Our main course options include Green Curry, Red Curry, Chilli Basil, Pad Thai, and Thai Fried Rice.

And of course, we have mouthwatering desserts like Fruit Plate, Chocolate Cake, and Bliss Balls Platter.

To quench your thirst, we offer a variety of beverages including Green/Black Tea, Ginger/Mint Tea, and filtered drinking water.

All your meals are included in this retreat, which means breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks will be provided for you.

Things to do (optional)

At Ananda Yoga & Detox Center, we can arrange boat trips around the island or to other islands. The local people have been fishing these waters for generations, and Koh Phangan is still full of fishermen who go out on their long tail boats every day.

You can practice kayaking and explore the surrounding beaches right in front of Ananda. It’s the perfect location.

If you want to explore everything the island has to offer at your own pace, we have motorbikes available for rent.

Experience mountain biking through the jungle paths or use it as a means of transport. Rent mountain bikes at Ananda Yoga & Detox Center.

Snorkeling is a great way to see the beautiful underwater world around the island. We have many great snorkel spots, especially on the Northwest coast. One of the best spots is located around the little island of Koh Ma (Horse Island), off Mae Haad beach at the Northwestern tip of Koh Phangan.

If you’re interested in Thai boxing, Koh Phangan has three Muay Thai stadiums in Thong Sala, one in Haad Rin, and one in Thong Nai Pan. You can attend regular events and experience Thailand’s most popular sport.

Visit Phaeng Waterfall National Park, located in the village of Madua Wan. It has a nice waterfall close to the entrance and some trekking routes to mountaintop viewpoints. You can even hike up to Koh Phangan’s highest mountain peak, Khao Ra, which stands at 630 meters.

Come and see the biggest don yang in Thailand! A don yang is a huge tropical tree, and this gigantic specimen measures 14 meters in diameter. It has stood for hundreds of years with branches, leaves, and limbs.

The Chinese temple is a result of a woman’s dream in 1990, where the Chinese Buddha spoke to her and asked her to build a firelight for the people. You can visit this beautiful temple and witness its spiritual significance.

Visit Wat Khao Noi, the oldest temple on Koh Phangan. It has ancient buildings and Chedis, with a Buddha statue that has been there for over 300 years.

The only downside is the direct street in front of the door and the music from the bars nearby on some evenings. But with good earplugs, that’s manageable too. The resort is located in a small park with swings and various seating areas to relax. They put a lot of effort into every aspect, and the staff are all very friendly. My bungalow was small and cozy with a hammock on the veranda. It’s not the newest, but it’s comfortable and sufficient. The yoga teachers were all amazing, with Sarah, Emma, and Valerie being my favorites. There are plenty of opportunities every day to try different types of yoga and you can plan your day as you like. The Shell Lounge opposite is cozy, right by the sea, where you can pamper yourself with delicious shakes and food.

The Garden Rooms are located close to a bustling street and some loud bars, so you might want to bring ear plugs.
The workshops should provide more details on what to expect, just the titles aren’t enough. I once attended a workshop where the teacher challenged our questions and claimed that believing in Karma was the only path to wholeness – it was unexpected and not something I would recommend.
The yoga classes were taught expertly, with knowledgeable teachers guiding us. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Watching the sunrise every evening during dinner made it a truly special experience.

The retreat costs may be on the high end, but they are comparable to other options on the island. It would have been helpful to have a clearer introduction about the food, including what’s included and what costs extra. Overall, everything was good! This retreat is self-paced, so you have the flexibility to choose which sessions to attend. Plus, with the individual room, you also get a daily free massage. The food choices were excellent, and we especially loved the restaurant.

When I was heading back, I had to pay for my taxi to the nearest village. They didn’t offer to let me stay another night at the dormitory, even though there was space available. They also charged me for laundry, which was pretty expensive. The retreat wasn’t worth the cost since the lessons were basically the same every day, focusing on relaxation and meditation. I couldn’t even keep up with some of the lessons. They did have a Christmas party, a women’s circle, and a Zen beach for swimming. But when I complained, they offered me some compensation.

Ananda offers both the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of yoga or start your yoga journey from scratch. Throughout my stay, I felt comfortable, learned a lot, and had the chance to rejuvenate. What I loved was being able to structure my day however I wanted, with a wide array of yoga and meditation options to choose from. Even though I didn’t do yoga teacher training, I could easily see this being the perfect place for it! Plus, you get incredible value for your money here. The food at “The Shell” at the beach was amazing, and the staff was always attentive and caring. All the yoga instructors are remarkable and have their own unique style. I also enjoyed the opportunity to delve deeper into the practice through the workshops offered. And of course, the pool, massages, steam bath, and ice bath were absolute luxuries! A big thank you to everyone for a fantastic week. I’ll definitely come back someday! Oh, and I’ve already recommended this place to all my friends and travel companions! 🙂

The street and some restaurants nearby can be noisy at times, but we absolutely loved our yoga retreat at Ananda! We stayed for 5 days and it exceeded our expectations. They offer a wide variety of yoga classes and workshops with amazing teachers. The food at the shell was delicious and the staff were fantastic. If you’re looking for the complete yoga experience and a great atmosphere on Koh Phangan, we highly recommend Ananda Yoga and Detox Center. We would definitely return without hesitation. We would have liked to receive a better introduction to the program, as beginners felt a bit lost in terms of which courses to take and what to expect from them.
The rooms were unfortunately very dark, which made it unpleasant to stay there.
The staff was very friendly, accommodating, and helpful.
There is a wide range of activities available.
There are many cozy places to relax, especially the restaurant right on the beach.
The food is delicious and there is a wide variety to choose from.
    The daily massages are heavenly.
Cleanliness is always maintained, especially with the yoga equipment, which is in very good condition.

We found our stay in Thailand after 2 weeks of traveling to be very relaxing and revitalizing. The accommodation was great – clean and pleasant. The yoga program was extensive and we had the opportunity to learn from various yoga teachers who brought different levels and teaching methods.

Meeting Sabina was a highlight for us as she guided us and assisted us in mastering the basic yoga positions. We were truly grateful for her teachings.

A big shoutout to Paola for her cheerful and friendly nature. She made our experience even more enjoyable. It was a pleasure staying here and we will definitely recommend it to others!

The rooms at Ananda Yoga and Detox were pretty good, considering Thailand standards. They did have a little mustiness during the rainy season. In terms of accommodation, all my needs were met, but the rooms were nothing fancy. Personally, I wished for access to a better beach, but I found out that those were about a 20 minute drive north of the resort.

When it came to yoga teacher training, I felt like I definitely got my money’s worth. Valerie, the trainer, has an incredible wealth of knowledge and a true passion for yoga that came through in her teaching. I was truly amazed by her ability to handle running the program and the resort, all while still connecting with each student.

Alona, another instructor, showed so much dedication to her students’ yoga practice and genuinely cared about others. She was really something special. And Britt, the third instructor, had a laid-back and approachable nature. She was all about lifting others up. Thanks to their guidance, I left the training feeling confident in my ability to successfully lead yoga classes.

There’s just one small thing that could be improved – one of the female staff members at the Shell lounge didn’t come across as very polite and seemed like she didn’t enjoy her job. She didn’t smile, make eye contact, or give many answers when we asked about the food. Thankfully, all the instructors were really good. Plus, the food was nice, and we loved the beautiful surroundings, like the garden and pool.

The teachers were well-trained and did a great job conveying the material. The location was amazing, right on the beach with a view of the sunset. And the food was delicious! I looked forward to every meal, which was always fresh, healthy, and varied. They accommodated my vegan diet and I always got really tasty meals.

    Yoga:
I was hoping for an authentic yoga retreat experience, but it turned out to be more like a resort with optional yoga classes. If you’re looking for a traditional retreat, this might not be the place for you, despite what the title suggests. They ended up canceling all five of the ashtanga mysore classes with no replacement teacher, which really limited the number of classes available for advanced practitioners. And to make matters worse, there was no compensation for the cancellations. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed.

    Accommodation:
The whole check-in process was confusing, with very little instructions given because the manager wasn’t present. When I got to my room, there were spider webs everywhere, and the bed wasn’t even made. I had to do it myself, hoping it was clean. And towards the end of my stay, they didn’t even bother refilling the toilet paper. It was surprising to see such lacking quality in a seemingly empty resort.

    Staff:
The staff here is a mixed bag. Some are super nice, while others seem annoyed and can’t even be bothered to greet you. It’s really hit or miss. The service at the restaurant is decent, but extremely slow. I ate there three times a day for six days straight, and they often forgot or mixed up orders.

    Massages:
As part of the package, I was supposed to have one massage per day. On my fifth massage, the therapist accidentally messed up my neck, which was concerning. The next day, I asked at the detox bar twice to pair me up with a different therapist, but they promised and never followed through. I had to endure two more massages with the same therapist, or I could’ve just skipped them altogether.

Overall, it wasn’t a terrible stay, but if you’re specifically looking for a yoga retreat, it’s not worth the money. The place is nice, although the rooms are basic and could be cleaner. The resort itself is welcoming and beautiful, with two yoga studios, an herbal sauna, a nice pool, and plenty of relaxing areas. The restaurant is also good, serving tasty food. The area is quiet, so it’s convenient to have a scooter for getting around.

The yoga retreat seemed a bit expensive compared to other options on the island when you separate the cost for yoga, food, and accommodation. However, it was definitely worth the money considering the breakthroughs I experienced, the people I met, the beautiful location, the amazing vibe, and the unforgettable memories. It would also be nice if the evening yoga session ended before sunset so that everyone could have the opportunity to see the sunset at the beach. The people I met at the retreat were incredible, the location was excellent, the atmosphere was really nice, and the vibes were great. The staff was fully dedicated to those on the detox program, and the yoga instructors were highly experienced.

I was expecting the rooms to be better, but honestly, for Koh Phangnan standards, they’re actually pretty nice. At Ananda’s teacher training, you get to bond with other Yogis and see the best in each other. It’s not a strict program like a Sivananda Ashram, but there’s plenty of information available to learn if you put in the effort. The food is amazing, and the pool, steam room, and staff are all great. This program goes beyond just poses; it’s well-thought-out and provides a wealth of information that will help you become a skilled Yoga teacher in every aspect.

The additional classes like pranayama, meditation, anatomy, and special classes (like pregnancy) require a lot of improvement. They should work on better room cleaning. The food, although very good, lacks variety which is disappointing for a long-term stay. It’s unfortunate that these points reflect the downside of a low-cost TTC. Overall, the yoga classes and alignment were excellent, but I was hoping for a more in-depth experience with all yoga topics.
