Retreat location

Ananda Yoga & Detox Center in Koh Phangan, Thailand will host the teacher training. Koh Phangan, an island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, is located about 100 kilometers from the coast of Southern Thailand in Surat Thani Province and about 15 kilometers from the famous resort island of Koh Samui. It is the largest of Samui’s neighboring islands, covering an area of 168 square kilometers. The island is mostly mountains and tropical forest, with some lowland areas of mountains and coconut fields. Around 14,000 people live on Koh Phangan, with the majority being of Chinese descent. Many Thais from all over Thailand have moved to the island to start tourism businesses. Most residents live in Thong Sala, the main gateway into the island from Samui. The main exports of the island are coconuts, with over one million being sent to Bangkok every month. Fishing and tourism are also important industries on the island. The population of Koh Phangan is mostly Buddhist, with religion playing a significant role in daily life.

Food

During this teacher training, the Ananda Yoga & Detox Center Restaurant will serve you three daily buffet-style meals. You can help yourself to drinking water and herbal teas whenever you like. The restaurant caters to yogi preferences with a variety of fresh vegetarian and vegan items, including raw foods, daily specials, vegan desserts, and healthy dishes. You can also enjoy international favorites and brown rice upon request.
Across the road, their beachfront cafe-lounge offers fresh juices, coconuts, shakes, coffee, teas, and more. And as a participant in the retreat, you’ll get 15% off your purchases. Don’t worry about meals – breakfast, lunch, and drinks are all included!

Things to do (optional)

– Ananda Yoga & Detox Center can arrange boat trips around the island or to other islands. Local fishermen still regularly go out on their long tail boats every day despite the recent changes on Koh Phangan.

– Practice kayaking and explore the surrounding beaches in the bay in front of Ananda.

– Rent motorbikes to explore the island at your own pace.

– Rent mountain bikes at Ananda for a jungle adventure or as a means of transport.

– Snorkeling gives you a glimpse of the beautiful underwater world around the island, with great spots on the Northwest coast like Koh Ma (Horse Island).

– Experience Thailand’s popular sport of Muay Thai at one of the three stadiums in Thong Sala, Haad Rin, or Thong Nai Pan.

– Visit Phaeng Waterfall National Park in Madua Wan village for a beautiful waterfall and trekking routes to viewpoints, including Koh Phangan’s highest peak Khao Ra.

– See the biggest don yang tree in Thailand, a massive tropical tree standing tall for hundreds of years.

– Explore the Chinese temple built after a woman had a dream in 1990 where the Chinese Buddha asked her to build a firelight for the people.

– Visit Wat Khao Noi, the oldest temple on Koh Phangan with ancient buildings and a Buddha statue that has been there for over 300 years.

In this teacher training, we include two one-hour Thai massages for you. You can also relax in the herbal sauna and enjoy a dip in the salt water swimming pool.

The only downside is the direct street in front of the door and on some evenings the music from the surrounding bars. But with good earplugs, that’s manageable too. The resort is located in a small park with swings and various seating options to relax. The staff put a lot of effort into all areas and are all very friendly. My bungalow was small and cozy with a hammock on the veranda. It’s not the newest, but it’s absolutely sufficient and comfortable. The yoga teachers were all great, my favorites being Sarah, Emma & Valerie. There are plenty of opportunities every day to try out different types of yoga and you can plan your day yourself. The Shell Lounge across the street is cozy right by the sea, where you can treat yourself to delicious shakes and food.

The Garden Rooms are located near a busy street and some noisy bars, so be sure to bring ear plugs.

It’s important to provide more information about what each workshop entails, rather than just the titles. I attended a workshop where the teacher unexpectedly pushed us to question our beliefs, insisting that embracing Karma is the key to inner peace – not what I had anticipated and not something I would recommend.

However, the yoga classes were expertly taught by knowledgeable instructors. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and accommodating. The beautiful sunrise views made dining a truly special experience every evening.

The costs may be on the high end compared to other options on the island, but they are similarly priced. It would have been helpful to have a clearer introduction to the food, including what’s included and what cost extra. Overall, everything was good! You get to choose which sessions to attend at this self-paced retreat, which is fantastic. Plus, with an individual room, you also receive a daily free massage. The food options were excellent, and we particularly enjoyed the restaurant.

I had to pay for my taxi to the nearest village on my way back. They wouldn’t let me stay another night at the dormitory before I went home, even though there were rooms available. They charged me for laundry. The retreat was very expensive. The lessons were repetitive and there was too much relaxation meditation. Sometimes I couldn’t even follow along with the lessons. They had a Christmas party and a Women’s Circle. We went swimming at Zen Beach. I had to complain to get any compensation.

Ananda offers a fantastic opportunity to deepen your knowledge of yoga or start your journey from scratch. I felt comfortable throughout my stay, learned a lot, and truly rejuvenated. What I loved most was the flexibility to structure your day as you wish. There were plenty of yoga and meditation offerings to choose from. While I didn’t do yoga teacher training, I could see this being the perfect place for it! You’ll get excellent value for your money here. The food at “The Shell” at the beach was amazing, and the staff was always attentive and caring. All the yoga instructors are outstanding and bring their own unique style. I also enjoyed the opportunity to delve deeper into the practice with the workshops offered. Luxury was definitely the pool, massages, steam bath, and ice bath! Thanks to everyone for a wonderful week. I’ll definitely return someday! I’ve already recommended this place to all my friends and travel companions! 🙂

The street and a few restaurants are nearby. It can get noisy sometimes. We absolutely enjoyed our yoga retreat at Ananda 🙂 We stayed for 5 days and we received more than we anticipated. There were plenty of yoga classes and workshops to choose from, and the teachers were fantastic. The food at the shell was delicious, and the staff there was lovely. We definitely recommend Ananda Yoga and Detox Center for the ultimate yoga experience and atmosphere on Koh Phangan. We would definitely return! Thanks for everything !

We felt relaxed and recharged after 2 weeks of traveling through Thailand. The accommodation was clean and nice. The yoga program was extensive with many different levels and teaching methods from various instructors. Meeting Sabina, who taught us basic yoga positions, was a highlight. Thanks to Paola for her cheerful demeanor and friendly spirit. We had a great time and will definitely recommend you!

The rooms at the resort were pretty good by Thailand standards, with a little bit of mustiness in the rainy season. They weren’t anything fancy, but they met all my needs for accommodation. I found myself wishing for a better beach, but I learned that the nicer ones were about a 20-minute drive to the north of the resort.

I felt like I got more than my money’s worth with the yoga teacher training at Ananda Yoga and Detox. Valerie, who has a wealth of knowledge and a deep love for yoga, really impressed me with her ability to run the program and connect with each of her students. Alona showed a strong dedication to improving her students’ yoga practice and genuinely cared for everyone. Britt, who has a laid-back and approachable nature, was great at uplifting others.

Overall, I left the training feeling confident in my ability to lead successful yoga classes.

Maybe there’s just one tiny thing that could be improved – one of the female staff at the Shell lounge didn’t seem very polite or happy with her job. She wasn’t smiling, making eye contact, or answering our questions about the food. On the bright side, all the instructors were really good. And the food was delicious, and the surroundings like the garden and pool were nice.

I absolutely loved it 🙂 I really enjoyed the training, I was able to improve my own practice and learn a lot about teaching yoga. The teachers were well-trained and could effectively deliver the material. The location was great, right on the beach with a view of the sunset. And the food was amazing! I looked forward to every meal, it was always fresh, healthy, and varied. They accommodated my vegan diet and I always got delicious meals 🙂

I came to this resort looking for a proper yoga experience, but I didn’t get what I was expecting. It’s more like a resort with the option to take yoga classes, but don’t expect a traditional retreat like the title suggests. Unfortunately, 5 out of 5 ashtanga mysore classes were canceled without a replacement teacher, limiting the number of classes available, especially for advanced students. There was no compensation for this, so I was quite disappointed.

When I arrived, the check-in process was confusing with very little instruction given since the manager wasn’t on site. My room had a lot of spider webs, the bed wasn’t made, and there was no refill of toilet paper towards the end of my stay. The quality was surprising given how empty the resort seemed.

The staff had a mixed experience – some were super nice, but others seemed annoyed and couldn’t even bother to say “hi.” The service in the restaurant was friendly but very slow, making mistakes with orders since I ate there multiple times a day for 6 days in a row.

The massages were included in the package, but on my 5th massage, the therapist hurt my neck. The next day, I asked twice at the bar to switch therapists, but they promised and never followed through, so I had to continue with the same therapist for 2 more massages or skip them altogether.

Overall, it wasn’t a terrible stay, but if you’re looking for a yoga retreat, this place may not be worth the money. The resort is nice with basic rooms that could be cleaner, but it’s very welcoming and pretty, offering 2 shalas, a herbal sauna, a nice pool, and plenty of chill-out areas. The restaurant serves good food and the area is quiet, so having a scooter to get around is helpful.

The yoga retreat seemed a bit expensive compared to other options on the island if you break down the cost of yoga, food, and accommodation. However, overall, it was worth the money for the breakthroughs we experienced, the interesting people we met, the beautiful location, the positive vibes, and the memories we made. It would be great if the evening yoga session ended before sunset so we could all enjoy watching the sunset at the beach together. The staff is dedicated to those in the detox program, and the yoga instructors have a wealth of experience. I was expecting the rooms to be better, but they’re actually really nice for Koh Phangnan standards. Ananda’s teacher training fosters a great bonding experience where Yogis can see the best in each other. It’s not as strict as a Sivananda Ashram, but there’s plenty of information available to learn if you put the work in. The food, pool, steam room, and staff are all great. This program isn’t just about poses; it’s well-planned and will give you a wealth of knowledge to effectively teach Yoga in every aspect.

We need to improve all additional classes like pranayama, meditation, anatomy, and special classes like pregnancy. The room cleaning wasn’t great. The food was tasty but there wasn’t much variety, which was disappointing for a long stay. These issues show the downside of a low-cost TTC. Overall, it was as expected, but I was hoping for a more in-depth experience with all yoga topics. The yoga classes and alignment were excellent.
