Yoga styles: Arm balancing

Why arm balancing?

That’s a great question! Arm balancing isn’t just about impressing people on Instagram. It actually challenges your body and mind in many ways. First, it helps you develop strength and flexibility throughout your whole body, which can make your mind more calm and flexible too. Balancing your body weight on your hands takes courage, and with practice, this can boost your confidence and help you connect with your body’s wisdom. In order to successfully balance in arm poses, you need to focus and concentrate. If your mind is distracted, you won’t be able to do it. So, like with any yoga practice, being present is key!

Program highlights

Balancing on your hands can be both inspiring and intimidating, which is why this program takes you step by step in preparing your body for more advanced postures.

Yoga theory

In the theory classes, we’ll review Patanjali’s Ashtanga yoga – the eight limbs of yoga – because it forms the foundation of living a yogic life. While asana practice is important for keeping your body strong and flexible, its ultimate purpose is to prepare your body for long hours of meditation. Sanskrit is the language of yoga, so you’ll also learn the Sanskrit names of arm balance poses. We’ll cover how to engage the bandhas to find stability in body and mind, as well as how mudras can help control prana, increase hand strength, and balance the five elements. Ultimately, arm balancing is all about balancing body and mind.

Anatomy and physiology

To practice arm balance poses efficiently and safely, it’s important to understand the skeletal and muscular systems, as well as the anatomy of the core, spine, and especially the hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders. When you understand how the bones align, you’ll realize that some poses are easier to master than you thought.

Art of teaching

  • How to practice and teach arm balancing poses
  • How to align the bones properly
  • How to incorporate arm balances into your classes
  • How to sequence them in a safe and efficient way
  • How to give verbal and physical alignment cues to your students
  • How to build the necessary arm strength

Art of practicing

  • How to properly warm up your body
  • How to perform the sequence of poses
  • How to flow through arm balancing poses
  • How to protect your joints
  • How to use props for support
  • How to transition into relaxation

Arm balancing poses

You’ll start with warm-up poses for the hands, shoulders, spine, core, legs, and the whole body. Then you’ll progress to more advanced arm balancing poses, including:

  • Bakasana – crane pose
  • Parsva bakasana – twisted crane pose
  • Eka pada bakasana – one-legged crane pose
  • Kakasana – crow pose
  • Bhujapidasana – shoulder pressing pose

Der ständige Baustellenlärm hat mich genervt, aber dank der liebevollen Unterstützung der Teilnehmerinnen und Yogalehrer bin ich über mich hinausgewachsen und habe Dinge gewagt, die vorher unmöglich schienen.

The bathrooms in the hostel were not the cleanest, but hey, it’s a hostel, so it’s expected. The course was absolutely amazing. Sandeep and Katharina taught with so much passion and had an incredible depth of knowledge about yoga history, philosophy, and the body. I learned so much in just three weeks, it felt like a whole semester at university, haha! The schedule was intense, but it was always enjoyable and the days seemed to fly by.

Overall, it was an incredible experience with the most wonderful people and amazing vibes. The teacher training was beyond impressive, and I honestly can’t think of anything negative to say. The accommodation was truly special, like a little oasis in Canggu.

The serenity house has its moments of noise, depending on the room and the noises from the street. Just something to keep in mind. But other than that, it’s a fantastic place – super tropical, friendly, and comfortable.

I absolutely loved the foundations of yoga – from the asanas to the anatomy classes and the yogic philosophy. It was all amazing! What really stood out to me was how the program was designed. The teaching methodology was top-notch, and I really enjoyed creating my own class, whether it was hatha, hatha flow, or vinyasa flow. The manual provided was incredibly detailed and illustrated, which I found very helpful.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the vegan breakfasts – they were absolutely delicious! All in all, it was a truly unique and inspirational experience. Thanks a lot for teaching and sharing with us!

I recommend having extra mosquito protection in the rooms. The teachers at this yoga school were incredible. They combined traditional and modern yoga practices, going beyond just the asanas. This helped us deepen our understanding and grow personally throughout the three weeks.

The teachers were top-notch, and they really knew their stuff! They made time for open and honest conversations, providing emotional support whenever we needed it. They always had a smile on their faces and took the time to get to know each of us as individuals.

The classes were suitable for all levels, and I highly recommend this yoga school to anyone looking to expand their understanding of yoga as a whole.

A big thank you to the teachers for all their time and support!

Sandeep and Katerina brought an incredible energy to the course. They were authentic, warm, intelligent, and so passionate about sharing their knowledge of yoga history and anatomy. I learned so much in such a short time because they made it fun and interesting.

I spent a while searching for the right course and this one just felt right in my gut. And when I arrived, I knew I made the right choice. They are real individuals and the classes are small, so you get a personalized experience. It was long hours, but totally worth it!

I had the most amazing experience with Anandam. I already miss them and all the amazing yogis I met in this course. I loved watching everyone complete their first class and finish the course together.

If you’re looking for a true experience, learning traditional yoga from an Indian and science and nutrition from a nutritionist and scientist, seriously look no further.

We stayed at Serenity Eco and their vegan food and drinks were amazing. Even the breakfast provided was yummy. Anandam rented out a shala for the course and it fit their health and wellness approach perfectly! I came for the course, not for a retreat holiday, but the surroundings were beautiful. The housing may be slightly rustic, but I hardly spent any time in my room. The pool, grounds, and garden were so beautiful! It’s only a 5-minute walk to the beach for sunrise and getting around with a gojek was easy if needed.

In short, if you’re eager to delve deeper into your Yoga practice, especially with a mix of traditional Indian style, don’t miss this golden opportunity for training. I personally plan on attending more sessions with Sandeep and Katherina in the near future!

The Yoga teacher training was transformed into an insightful journey thanks to Katherina and Sandeep’s guidance. They made sure to give individual attention to each participant, challenging and nurturing us. Sandeep’s sessions on Hatha Yoga were particularly outstanding, striking the perfect balance between demanding and engaging, taking our practice to new depths.

The food during our training was delicious and nutritious, leaving us feeling satisfied. Every bite seemed to be crafted with love and intention, providing the perfect fuel for our intense training days.

The peaceful setting of Heimbach, where our training took place, couldn’t have been more ideal. Surrounded by serene landscapes, it amplified our learning experience and created the perfect atmosphere for introspection and growth.

One of the most memorable moments was the ethereal fire ceremony. It wasn’t just a ritual; it was a deeply profound experience of connection and transformation. This ceremony truly captured the essence of our collective journey, becoming a cherished memory.

A big thank you to both Sandeep and Katherina for everything!
