Program

It’s better to recharge your mind and spirit by doing yoga in the garden or at the villa. Start your day with a morning yoga session with a Balinese yoga instructor in a spacious, open-air yoga area surrounded by a beautiful garden. You’ll be guided through the ancient practice of classical yoga to find inner peace, improve your physical strength, and expand your horizons using various poses, breathing exercises, meditation, and relaxation techniques. The yoga sessions are held every morning from 7:00 to 8:00.

Retreat location

In Ubud’s known history, the Javanese Hindu priest Rsi Marhandya came from Java to Bali in the eighth century. He meditated at the confluence of the two Wos rivers at Campuan, which is where the Purana Boutique resort is located. The area later became a shrine and was expanded by the Javanese priest Dang Hyang Nirartha, who is considered the founder of Bali’s religious practices and rituals. The name “Ubud” comes from the Balinese word “Ubad,” which means medicine, reflecting the area’s history as a center of natural medicine and healing.

Over the next few hundred years, more temples and monasteries were established in Ubud. The Gunung Kawi temple complex and the cave temples at Goa Gajah are architectural remnants from this period. Many of the dances, drama, and rituals that originated during this time are still performed in Ubud today.

During this era, King Airlangga ruled both Java and Bali, with his seat of government located in Batuan village, southeast of Ubud. In 1343, Bali was conquered by the Javanese Majapahit Kingdom, with the final victory against the Pejeng Dynasty near Bedulu, east of Ubud. This victory led to a flourishing of Balinese culture, and the aristocratic families in Ubud today can trace their ancestry back to this period.

In the sixteenth century, the Majapahit Kingdom was transplanted entirely to Bali as a result of the Islamization of Java. Power shifted between various dynasties and feudal lords, but the Ubud area remained an important part of the island. In 1900, Ubud became a Dutch protectorate, and the colonialists had little interference, allowing the traditional arts and culture of the area to remain relatively unchanged.

The modern era of Ubud began in the 1930s when foreign artists were encouraged by the royal family to settle in the town. Artists like Walter Spies and Rudolph Bonnet played a significant role in promoting Balinese art and culture worldwide. In the 1960s, travelers began to visit Ubud, although the infrastructure was still limited. Since then, Ubud has grown into a popular international destination while maintaining its status as the center of Balinese art and culture.

Distances:
– Artistic Center of Cultural Ubud: 15 minutes

I have traveled a lot before, including staying in expensive hotel chains, but I’ve never experienced the warm and heartfelt hospitality like at Purana. They take care of everything and it’s definitely the top choice in Ubud. There are other cafes and restaurants around the hotel, as well as a club with a large pool area, so you can also enjoy diverse dining outside of the hotel. The property is like a small green paradise and very well-maintained. The hotel offers a shuttle service to the city center, which is a big plus for solo travelers like me. The package I booked included everything to get to know the typical Bali, with the yoga session being particularly special, and I highly recommend the massages. I came back feeling 100% rejuvenated and I would choose and recommend this hotel again. Thank you very much.

I wanted to take my first solo trip, so I decided to start with a yoga retreat in Ubud. Staying at this hotel was definitely a great idea.

The entire staff was always very attentive and helpful, always with a smile. My teacher Tini was more than just a teacher. She helped me connect with my inner self and introduced me to new techniques and poses that I really enjoyed. I’m so grateful to have met her… she is a beautiful person with a very pure energy. Without a doubt, if you’re looking to take a break from your hectic life, this place is perfect.

The driver who took me on the scheduled excursion, Weyan, was an amazing guide, driver, and a really good photographer ;P. He was always willing to capture the moments I asked for 🙂

Having a romantic dinner with myself was a bit funny when I think about it, hahaha, but it was really beautiful and enjoyable.

The included treatments were the best! Who doesn’t love being massaged? 😛

Thanks to all the staff who were always attentive and helped me relax and connect with myself.

Terima kasih 🙂 (Thank you in Indonesian)

Everything was perfect. However, I have a simple suggestion: I find it unfortunate that the restaurant is located at the reception level and occupies the space of the lobby. The restaurant should be placed in a different location for more privacy, or on another floor. I had a wonderful and high-quality stay at Purana Boutique Resort.

Tini, the yoga teacher, is amazing because she also provides therapeutic massages.

I loved the candlelight dinner. The team puts in a lot of effort to make it a magical moment, and the meal prepared by the chef was excellent.

I also loved the beauty and comfort of the private villa and the room with a private pool. I also enjoyed the massage and facial treatment. For these two, I requested to have them done directly in their salon at Purana Suites rather than in the room.

And the day spent with August on the excursion was amazing. August is very professional, with a true sense of customer service and good English communication. He does everything possible to ensure your satisfaction. Thank you to him.

I was blown away by the whole experience at Purana Boutique Resort! It’s so hard to choose my favorite part, whether it’s the amazing accommodations, the fantastic morning yoga classes with Tini in our villa, the private cooking lesson, or the exceptional service from the entire staff, especially Augus. They went above and beyond to surprise my friend on her birthday, making it all extra special. If you want a truly fantastic experience in the heart of Bali, I can’t recommend Purana Boutique Resort enough!

I had such a great time at Purana Suite! The staff was super friendly and made me feel so comfortable and welcome. Tini, the yoga teacher, was absolutely amazing. She did an outstanding job and I feel so lucky to have met her. Noru, the driver, was fantastic and took me around town for my purification. The cooking class was also really well-prepared and a lot of fun. Thank you so much!

I wish the shower area in my bathroom was better. I didn’t like the wooden decking in there.

They did the massage in my room or on the balcony. It didn’t have the spa vibe I was hoping for, but I managed to fix that by playing a spa playlist on my own portable speaker from Spotify.

The construction next door was a real downer though. It was so noisy one of the days, but the other days were quieter.

Let me tell you, the staff at Purana boutique resort are some of the friendliest and nicest people I’ve ever met. They were so welcoming to me as a single traveler. I even extended my stay by one night and treated myself to an extra session of yoga and massage because two nights just wasn’t enough for a “retreat”. It was such a great deal for the money. Tini was amazing in the one-on-one yoga sessions. I’ve never felt so stretched and worked out before. She even incorporated therapy into our sessions. And massages every day! What more could I ask for?

Breakfast by the pool right outside my room was pure bliss. And there’s an awesome coffee place just outside the resort.

I have nothing to complain about. Dex Tini was a wonderful yoga teacher. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better.
The spot on the hotel terrace where the yoga took place was incredibly beautiful.
The hotel was perfectly located for dining out, shopping, etc., and all the staff were super friendly and very competent in their work.
As a solo traveler, I felt completely comfortable.

I wasn’t too happy with the breakfast I paid extra for. The options were really limited and the chef didn’t even know how to fry an egg properly. On top of that, by the time it arrived in my room, it was already cold because they had to transport it from another location. This caused some problems for me since I had other appointments to get to and I had to order it at specific times, but it was always delivered 30-45 minutes late.

As for the yoga retreat, it was a bit underwhelming. I know they had to let go of some staff due to Covid, but they really should have hired someone with more experience. Juli, the instructor, was a very nice lady, but she ended up doing the same easy yoga routine every single day without making any modifications for my personal restrictions caused by my back issues. The whole sequence felt disjointed and far from the meditative and relaxing experience that yoga should be. It wasn’t challenging at all or a good workout to get my heart rate up. I also found it stressful when she would ask me to do poses that I couldn’t do without offering any alternatives. However, she did help me stretch well and gave some good tips on my posture. She was also kind enough to offer massages for my sore areas. I just think she needs more training as a yoga teacher and the resort should put in more effort to create a true retreat atmosphere. There was no music, aromatherapy, incense, or sense of community. Additionally, unlike other teachers I’ve had, she didn’t even introduce herself or set any intentions for the practice.

On a positive note, the one bedroom pool villa I stayed in was absolutely gorgeous and comfortable. The staff were all so accommodating and kind. The shuttle services were excellent as well, and the whole staff went above and beyond to make sure I had a pleasant stay.

All our meals were served late, which was quite disappointing. The most frustrating part was when our last breakfast arrived half an hour late, and the staff didn’t even apologize. To make matters worse, they left out several items that should have been included. We had to specifically request things like milk, and it took them over 20 minutes to bring us our drinks. I had even mentioned that I don’t eat red meat, yet there was ham included in the breakfast. On top of that, the toast they served was cold.

To add to the dissatisfaction, when we checked out, the receptionist didn’t bother to ask about our stay. As someone working in customer service, it’s important to always inquire about the customer’s experience. Thank you.

Aside from these issues, the villa itself was wonderful. We enjoyed the private pool, spacious room, and comfortable bed. The cleanliness was satisfactory, although not perfect. The staff we encountered were kind and friendly. Additionally, the yoga classes were absolutely amazing, thanks to the professional instructor.

I didn’t find anything about this enjoyable. We liked everything, the beautiful location in the rice fields, the staff is very service-oriented and nothing is too much. Our butler Arya was very nice and nothing was too much for him either. The yoga classes started very early (at the other Purana location) at 7 am, but even for Ibu, this was no problem and her classes were excellent.

We couldn’t have stayed longer because there wasn’t a lot of sunshine, so we didn’t fully enjoy the pool. The pool was a bit shady. However, everything was amazing! We were absolutely amazed by every single detail of our stay at Purana. Seriously, we couldn’t find a single thing to complain about. Our honeymoon celebration there was beyond incredible. The Purana team went above and beyond to make sure our time there was absolutely unforgettable. Arya and the rest of the team made us feel so welcome, like we were hanging out with good friends. The atmosphere at Purana is so cozy and peaceful. It truly felt like we had the whole resort to ourselves. They even brought all our meals, tea, and massages straight to our room. We got to have private yoga sessions without any interruptions in the most serene locations. Arya took us to all the places we wanted to visit and even suggested some extra fun things to do. If we mentioned that we loved coffee, he took us to a coffee plantation. And if we said a butterfly was beautiful, he took us to a butterfly observatory. We seriously can’t thank Arya and the Purana family enough for all their hard work. They created memories for us that will stay with us forever. We can’t wait to come back and visit again soon!

This retreat can’t be called a yoga and cycling getaway truthfully. Although the resort amazed us with its beauty, the yoga sessions were quite basic (like for beginners) and one day the instructor didn’t even show up. But let me tell you, the rooms were absolutely gorgeous and equipped with top-notch amenities. The staff, oh my, they were outstanding! Always there for us, catering to our every need.

The restaurant isn’t in the best location, but it doesn’t really matter because Ubud is only 5-8 minutes away and there are plenty of amazing restaurants there. We’ve been to many places, but this is definitely the best one we’ve stayed at considering the price. The villa is absolutely stunning and secluded, and we were treated like VIPs. August, our butler, was exceptional at his job. I wish I could hire him! Doing yoga every day next to our own pool was so inspiring, and having breakfast delivered right after was such a delightful surprise. We’re already making plans for a longer stay.

I didn’t really enjoy some of the room service food, like the duck spring rolls and calamari rings. They didn’t taste fresh at all! But, the Crispy Duck was absolutely amazing and made up for it.

I was really looking forward to the candlelight dinner that was included in my package. Unfortunately, it was raining that night, so they couldn’t set up the pool with petals like I had hoped. I was a bit disappointed, but I understood. The dinner itself wasn’t really to my taste, it was a 3-course meal.

The best things about my stay at Purana were the beautiful villa with a private pool. It was incredible to have my bath and shower outside. However, I have to mention that if you’re scared of spiders, mosquitoes, and other flying creatures (like I am), you might want to think twice about staying in Ubud, as it’s a tropical location and you’ll encounter unwanted critters throughout your stay.

I had never done yoga before, but my instructor was so patient, kind, and made me feel really comfortable.

The breakfast served in my villa every morning was the absolute best part. I love boutique resorts for this reason. The breakfast menu had a huge variety of options to choose from. One day, I even had a “floating breakfast” which was lovely.

I also went on a private excursion around the North of Ubud. I paid 600,000 IDR for a half-day trip to see some temples, the view of Mount Batung, Tegalalang Rice Terrace, and the Monkey Forest. My butler, Adi, accompanied me on this trip and shared some historical information at each location. They have a lot of different excursions to choose from, and they even let you customize them to your preference.

Overall, I would definitely recommend staying at Purana. It’s a beautiful resort with excellent customer service.

There were flies buzzing around the balcony, especially when I was enjoying my meals outside. Plus, getting to the resort is a bit secluded with no lampposts along the way. You’ll need to use the shuttle bus service for transportation, especially at night. But if you’re okay with walking in the dark, you can do that too. The resort’s service was outstanding!
